Do You Have Joy in Your Life?

Friend, can I ask you a personal question? Do you have joy in your life? 

All too often I find that women I speak to who are empty, do not have joy in their life. 


Merriam-Webster dictionary defines joy as “a source or cause of delight.” It is a state of happiness and emotion evoked by “possessing what one desires.”

If I defined joy for myself, it would be anything that brings a smile to my face, a lightness to my heart, and a fulfillment to my soul.

For me, joy looks like:

  • Quiet mornings, drinking coffee, reading God’s Word, and watching the sunrise (the picture below was one of my favorites from last week!).
  • Date nights with my husband.
  • Coffee with girlfriends, talking and laughing our way through life.
  • Paddle boarding at the lake, basking in the warm sun, and enjoying God’s creation.
  • Breathing, stretching, and moving my body on a yoga mat.
  • Leisurely strolling through stores, browsing the home decor section.
  • Hanging out with family and those I love the most!

There’s nothing fancy about the things that bring me joy. And in fact, what brings me joy today is nothing what it looked like a decade ago.

To be quiet honest, this list of joy-filling activities used to be blank.

When I was living life off balance and overwhelmed, I didn’t have time to do anything that brought me joy.

And, in fact, I didn’t even realize I was missing it until I slowed down enough to realize my soul, my lifeline, was as dry as a desert.

Part of this parched soul was not being intentional about finding joy in my day.

What are those activities that bring you joy?

Do you even know what brings you joy? 

If you answered, “no” then you are in the right place!

Today is your invitation to start being intentional about bringing joy back to your life; to start doing those activities that puts a smile on your face, that brings a lightness to your heart, and fulfillment to your soul.

How Do You Find Joy?

Finding and then executing joy throughout your days is so important for your soul. It will move you from empty to full.

But, how do you find this joy?

It starts with trying. Try finding small chucks of time to do one activity that you think brings you joy.

After you do this activity, reflect on whether the activity did in fact fill your soul. You can use the journaling worksheet for this week to reflect on this.

Give yourself a +1 if the activity brought a lightness to your step. Give yourself a zero if it was neutral, and a -1 if the activity sucked the life and joy out of you.

When you find an activity that fills you, move it to the Soul-Filling Box. If there is activity that completely drains you, move it to the Energy Draining Box. You can find the journaling worksheet here!

Over time, you will find that there will be a handful of activities that really bring life to your weary soul. It is these activities that you need to work into your days as often as you can.

Being empty, but moving to full is found in doing things that bring you joy.

I think it is best summed up this way, “A joyful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.” (Proverbs 17:22, ESV).
